How to Play Buraco

Description

Brazil's rummy, played in pairs with two decks and a pot you have to earn before you can finish.

Also known as: Burraco

Objective

Form melds and complete a canasta of seven or more cards, then go out before your opponents.

Setup

Two decks plus jokers, played in two partnerships. Deal eleven cards to each player.

Two dead hands of eleven cards each are set aside face down — these are the pots.

Rules

On your turn, draw one card from the stock or take the entire discard pile, then meld if you can, and discard one card to finish.

Melds are three or more cards of the same rank, or runs in sequence within a suit. Jokers and twos are wild.

A meld of seven or more cards is a canasta — clean if it contains no wild cards, dirty if it does.

Winning

When a partnership plays its last card, that player picks up one of the pots and continues playing with it.

A partnership can only go out once it has taken a pot and completed at least one canasta. Scores are tallied from melds, canastas and the cards left in opponents' hands.
