How to Play Gin Rummy
Description
A two-player draw-and-discard game where the aim is to build runs and sets and knock before your opponent can. Knock too early and they might undercut you.
Objective
Be first to reach 100 points across hands, then win the match outright with end-of-game bonuses.
Setup
Each of two players gets ten cards.
The rest form the draw pile, with one card turned face-up to start the discard pile.
Rules
Draw from the draw pile or discard pile, then discard one card.
Group your cards into sets (same number) or runs (same suit, consecutive).
Anything left over is deadwood and counts against you.
Knock once your deadwood totals 10 or less to end the hand.
Winning
When you knock, your opponent may add matching cards to your sets and runs before deadwood is compared.
Lower deadwood wins the hand and scores the difference.
Going out with zero deadwood (Gin) scores a 25-point bonus.
Catching a knocker whose deadwood is higher than yours (an undercut) also scores 25.
Once someone reaches 100, the match ends and bonuses are added.
The winner gets 100 points, plus 25 for every hand they won along the way.
If the loser never scored a single point, the winner's bonus doubles.
