How to Play Klondike Solitaire

Description

The solitaire — seven columns, four foundations, and a draw pile between you and a cleared board. The version you've played more times than you can remember.

Also known as: Solitaire; Patience

Objective

Move all 52 cards onto the four foundation piles, sorted by suit from Ace to King.

Setup

Seven tableau columns are dealt in a staircase, each with one card face-up on top.

The rest form the draw pile.

Rules

Build tableau columns downward, alternating red and black.

An empty column can only be filled by a King.

Move cards onto the foundation piles in order, starting with Aces.

Draw from the draw pile one card at a time.

When the draw pile runs out, the discard pile recycles and you can go through it again as many times as you like.

Winning

You win once every card has reached a foundation pile.

There's no penalty for a stuck board — if the deal can't be completed, the game simply doesn't resolve.

Moderate difficulty — the deal is fixed rather than freshly shuffled each time, so the same layout will always play out the same way.
