How to Play Primero

Description

The Renaissance ancestor of poker — four cards, layered bets, and the art of making your hand look stronger than it is. Bluffing was considered a refined social skill.

Also known as: Primera

Objective

Have the best hand at showdown — or convince everyone else to fold before it gets there.

Setup

Three to six players, using a 40-card deck (no 8s, 9s, or 10s). Everyone antes into the pot.

Deal four cards to each player.

Rules

Betting happens in rounds — players can bet, match, or fold based on how confident they are in their hand.

Between rounds, players may discard cards and draw replacements to improve their hand.

The best possible hand is a prime — one card from each of the four suits — with specific point values attached to each rank, similar in spirit to a poker hand.

Winning

At showdown, whoever holds the best hand takes the pot.

A tie is settled by comparing card point totals; if still tied, the pot carries over into a fresh deal.
